The College offering B.A Pass/Hons. and Bachelor Degree in Library and Information Science (BLISc.) is situated in the picturesque place of mountains at Samdur, Tadong, Gangtok, the capital of Sikkim. The college is connected by National Highway 31A. The nearest railway Station New Jalpaiguri and nearer Airport, Bagdogra are 117 km and 120 km respectively away from the college.
My father late Damber Singh Chhetri used to ask me somewhere in 1950 when I was a primary school student, to teach my neighbourers after the school to write their names to be used in any transaction instead of putting their thumb impression which resulted in the establishment of an Educational Society by the name Rhenock Educational Society for promotion of education in the 1990. The revolutionary idea of my late father to teach people to write their names created more interest of many people in education.
The beginning of Open Schooling System during the second half of the 1980s was instrumental in fulfillment of my social mission. Since then about 1000 students take admission in secondary and senior secondary classes every year.
My experiment with the open school children was stimulating yet fulfillment of their urge for higher learning was both a social obligation and a challenge too. Nonetheless, I accepted the challenge as a mission of my life. In 1994, Damber Singh College under Rhenock Educational Society was established at Fiveways, Deorali, as a regular general college initially affiliated to University of North Bengal. Now it is affiliated with Sikkim University, a Central University from 2008-09 academic session.
Since inception, the college has been serving as an alternative institution of higher learning in the capital city Gangtok. In 2004, the college was shifted to a more scenic place and in a spacious building at Samdur, Tadong in response to the need for both vertical and horizontal expansion. It provides three year honours degree course in Humanities and One year Bachelors Degree course in Library & Information Sciences besides B.Sc (IT), and M.A in many subjects.
