The Bangalore Medical College and Research Institute was started as a private Medical college in the year 1955 by Mysore Education Society. The Founders of this Society were  Dr. R. Shivaram, Dr. Mekhri, Dr. B.K. Narayana Rao and Dr. B.V. Ramaswamy. In the year 1957 it was handed over to the then Government of Mysore and was affiliated to Mysore University and then on to the Bangalore University. In the year 1996 it got affiliated to the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences.

Bangalore Medical College and Research Institute has MCI recognition for Undergraduate 150 seats  + 100 seats admitted under 10A of MCI rules, 135 Postgraduate Masters Degree, 71 Diploma seats, {MS Anatomy, MD Physiology, MD Biochemistry, MD Pharmacology, MD Pathology, MD Microbiology, MD P & SM, MD Forensic Medicine,MS Ophthalmology,   MS ENT, MS Orthopedics, MD Anesthesiology, MD Paediatrics, MD Gen. Medicine, MD Gen. Surgery, MD OBG, MD Radio Diagnosis, MD Radio Therapy, MD Psychiatry, MD Skin & V.D} and  Super Specialty seats for M.Ch Urology, M.Ch Plastic Surgery, M.Ch Paediatric Surgery is recognised by MCI. DM Neurology, M.Ch Surgical Gastroenterology admitted under 10A of MCI rules.

Bangalore Medical College and Research Institute has Fellowship programmes in Vitreo Retina, Surgical Gastroenterology, Neurology, Cornea & External diseases of Eye, Cosmetic Dermatology,Glaucoma, Paediatric Dermatology, Paediatric Anaesthesiology, Accident Trauma & Emergency Care, Community Ophthalmology  and Dermato Surgery with 2 seats each. Para-medical courses are Medical lab technician, X-ray technician, Medical record technician, Health inspector, Ophthalmology, Operation Theatre Technician simultaneously being run in the Institution and also Allied science like B.Sc Medical lab technician and B.Sc Operation Theatre Technician  are also running by the institution.

The College has a Central library stocked with several standard books and subscribes to about 120 journals (Foreign & Indian) each year.

The Institute is also involved in community health services at the Urban Family Welfare center, Siddiah road and Primary health centers at Sondekoppa, K G Halli, Hesarghatta and Pavagada.

Emergency services are available 24 hours including Traumatology and Blood bank
2-CT Scanners have been installed- one at Victoria Hospital and one at Bowring and Lady Curzon Hospital.
These hospitals and the facilities provided by the Institution caters to half of the population of Bangalore City and surrounding areas.  The bed strength is around 2992.

The Centenary building houses new wards, the Nuclear medicine department with gamma camera and Modern Operation theatres. A Dharmashala, on the campus provides highly subsidized accommodation for patients attendants.

Bangalore Medical College and Research Institute Alumni Association has constructed a Digital Library and State of the Art Seminar Hall.  This Digital Library has 65 nodes, which is used by the students and faculty of Bangalore Medical College and Research Institute to acquire latest knowledge. A State of Art Seminar Hall has been constructed with a capacity of 280 seats with the facilities of latest equipment for Tele-teaching. A Tele-medicine unit in collaboration with ISRO was started on the eve of Golden Jubilee Celebrations on 1.1.2006, with this Bangalore Medical College and Research Institute is the first Govt. Medical College to provide this facility in the state of Karnataka.

M/s. Infosys Foundation has constructed and donated a 24 hours Central Laboratory at Victoria Hospital campus for the poor and needy patients at a cost of Rs 3 crores and Government of Karnataka has installed equipments worth of Rs. 3 crores for  the Lab.  It will not only fulfilsl the long pending requirement of the MCI, but also it will be very useful to Undergraduates, Postgraduates & Super-specialty students and faculty of Bangalore Medical College and Research Institute.

Victoria Hospital is one of the oldest Hospitals with approximately 1000 beds wherein more than 800 patients are admitted as inpatient and nearly 900 patients are treated as out-patients every day.

Vani vilas hospital, also one of the oldest hospitals has 536 beds and an average of 75-80 patients are treated as out-patients every day, 17-20 patients admitted, and average 500 surgeries per month are conducted.

Bowring and Lady Curzon hospital has 676 beds and an average of 700-900 patients are treated as outpatients every day, 70-80 patients get admitted, and average 420-450 deliveries per month are conducted in addition to 800 surgeries per month.
