This college was established in 1964 in the Sheth M J High School building with 103 students in the Arts and 40 students in the Commerce faculties. Initially, the college was run by the Sheth Maganlal Jeychand High School Board, which was established in the year 1917. By June 1967 the college had its own building ready and it was shifted to the new premises, under a new management the Viramgam College Kelvani Mandal.
Initially the college offered two main subjects in the Arts faculty, namely, Economics and Gujarati. The Commerce faculty offered Advanced Accounting and Auditing as main subjects and Secretarial Practice as the subsidiary subject. But as years rolled on, the college added more subjects either as Main or Subsidiary to meet the need of the changing times and to help the students with wider job opportunities or to find self-employment.
Today, this college offers six main subjects in the Arts Faculty Economics, Gujarati, Hindi, Sanskrit, Psychology, and Home Science. More subsidiary subjects were added both in the Arts and Commerce faculties, including Computer Science. English is taught as a compulsory subject in all the classes as per the syllabus of the Gujarat University. Today there are sixteen subjects that are taught here with twelve Departments.
Since 1985, under the dynamic chairmanship of the present Chairman, Mr. Sevantilal K Vora, this institution has been making rapid progress in every direction. The fact that more than 50% of the members of the Governing Body are past students of this college makes this easier. The management makes every effort to meet all the necessary infrastructural and other necessary facilities of the college as and when the need arises. More subjects were added and the number of students reached upto 1500 from the initial 143. This Institution has gained its reputation as one of the best-run colleges of the University in the rural area with well-trained and efficient teachers, with very good discipline. This institution has managed to produce excellent results, in spite of it being in a very backward area with many limitations. It has always been the endeavor of both the management and the staff to make it an institution about which we all, including the students, could always feel proud and we are indeed proud of our college.
