Faculty of Architecture-UPTU, Lucknow, located on a 6-acre site, is at a walking distance from the city center of Hazratganj. It started as a part of Government College of Arts & Crafts in 1911 and is one of the oldest in the country.
The Institution separated from Government College of Arts and Crafts in 1976, with its new name Govt. School of Architecture which was, later, renamed in 1980 as Govt. College of Architecture, Lucknow (Popularly called GCA, Lucknow) as it acquired the status of the constituent college of Lucknow University. Till the academic session of 1999-2000 the College, constituting the Faculty of Architecture of Lucknow University, conducted a 5-year degree course leading to the award of a Bachelors degree in Architecture (B. Arch). With the academic session 2000-2001, as per the decision of the government applied to all other technical institutions of the State, it got affiliated to the newly established U.P. Technical University, Lucknow for all academic matters.
The administrative Control and the financial grants of the college remained with the Technical Education Department of the UP Government. For a brief period of about two years, the college functioned as an autonomous college with name Lucknow College of Architecture
Presently, this University is renamed as the Uttar Pradesh Technical University, Lucknow and the college is merged with it as its integral part and known as the Faculty of Architecture-UPTU.
The College/Faculty, since its inception, has acquired a sound reputation for its studio-based curriculum and providing a balanced understanding of architecture in a stimulating environment for creativity. A well-stocked library with approximately 12000 books and journals helps to enrich the knowledge of students. A growing computer Centre keeping pace with time and good hostel facilities for girls and boys facilitates sound academic environment and enchanting campus life.
The Faculty has proposal to start two more under-graduate and two post-graduate courses of which the Universsity has already granted approval for one Post-graduate programme and sanctioned a seed grants. Besides its annual grants from the University, the Faculty also recieves the committed additional grants from the U P Government.
