Government Madhav Science College or as called `Madhav Vigyan Mahavidyalaya`, was set up in 1951 in Ujjain, a highly venerated pilgrimage centre enshrining Mahakaleshwar and a place notably rich in cultural heritage, tradition and civilization in Madhya Pradesh. The college was established in 1892 within the Madhav Arts & Commerce college, dewas gate, Ujjain, affiliated to Agra University.
It became a constituent college of Vikram University, Ujjain when the latter came into existence in 1957 and remained so till 1969. Then it became an affiliated college of the university from 1969 to 1995. From 1995 to 2005 it again acquired the status of a constituent college of the university. From 2005 onwards it is an affiliated college of the university. In 1960 post-graduate classes of the university in science subjects were started in it. After making a humble beginning with a small enrolment, faculty and infrastructure, as an institution run by the state government, it became a premier co-educational Science College of Madhya Pradesh having a sprawling campus to which it had shifted in 1969.The college offers B.Sc (General) in Biological and Physical Sciences and M.Sc degree in Botany, Zoology and Chemistry with some self finance courses like Mathematics, Pharmaceutical chemistry, Applied Microbiology .
It has eleven departments i.e., Botany, Zoology, Chemistry, Physics, Geology, Economics, Geography, Statistics, Mathematics, Hindi and English. The courses are also offered in Computer Science, Computer Applications, Microbiology, Electronics, Pharmaceutical chemistry, IT, BCA, Bioinformatics and Biotechnology. The college has an enrolment of 1975 students. The college has forty four permanent and more than 20 temporary teachers. The college offers 29 subject combinations at UG level for the students as per the rules and regulations of the university.The college is included in the list of colleges maintained by the UGC under sections 2 (f) and 12 (B) of its Act of 1956 since July, 1969 and has been regularly receiving UGC developmental assistance as per its entitlement in terms of its enrolment and merit of its proposals for under-graduate and post-graduate programs.
Infrastructure consists of Principal`s office, classrooms, library, computer centre, science laboratories, office and play grounds spread over 5.6 hector (total built up area of about 40,000sq.mts.).

DST New Delhi has adjudged this college for FIST DST programme and given Rs. 45 lacs for the purchase of equipments and upgradation of academic standards.
College has been selected among one of the best 12 colleges in MP by the department of higher education Govt. of MP for signing MoUs with premier institutes and industries.
The college career & counselling cell is very active and successfully placed 886 students in the last 5 years through campus selection.
The college students do exceedingly well in NCC, NSS & Red Cross activities.
This college has been selected on the basis of merit and performance for RUSA (Rastriy Uchch Shiksha Abhiyan).grants under two components Research & Innovation Rs. 1.5 crore & Infrastructure Rs. 1 crore. This is the only college in the whole division to receive this grant under above mentioned criteria.
