Prof. S.S. Singh is currently Director, National Law Institute University, Bhopal, M.P. Before taking over as Director NLIU, he was in the Indian Institute of Public Administration, New Delhi where he worked as Professor of Justice and Administration. Prof. S. S. Singh holds his Masters (Gold Medal - 1978) and Ph. D (1984) in Law from R.D. University, Jabalpur. He had his advanced training in Training Methodology from University of Slough, U.K.(SToT - 1992). He was awarded fellowship under the Higher Education Link Scheme of the British Council Division, British High Commission to complete research study on “Citizen and Administration: A Comparative Study of Ombudsman Institution in India and U.K.”.
Prof. Singh has done pioneering work in the area of consumer protection and welfare. He has completed two initial research studies in relation to the working of District Consumer Forums and State Commissions. He has also organized around 60 training programmes for the Members of the State Consumer Commissions and the Presidents and the Members of the District Consumer Forums. He was instrumental in setting up the Centre for Consumer Studies at IIPA with the financial assistance from the Department of Consumer Affairs, GoI. He has carried out a major Consultancy Assignment in the area of Promoting involvement of Research Institutions/ Universities/ Colleges in consumer protection and consumer welfare from 2004-2008. He has been a Member of the Working Group on Consumer Protection constituted by the Planning Commission, GoI for the Eleventh Five Year Plan and also of the Twelth Five Year Plan.
His major areas of interest include Administrative Law, Constitutional Law, Consumer Protection, Ombudsman, and Vigilance in Government, Right to Information, Administrative Accountability and Public Interest Litigation.
He has carried out a number of research and evaluation studies sponsored by National and International agencies. He has supervised 29 Ph.D./ M.Phil./ MDPA Dissertation. Apart from this he has conducted a number of research/evaluation studies. He has been associated with a number of committees and commissions on various aspects of administration of the Central and State governments. He is also member of the Academic Council, Executive Council and Selection committees of various Central and State Universities.
A prolific writer, he has written 13 Books, 15 Monographs / Case Laws, 13 Book Reviews and more than 80 Research Papers in different areas of Public Law and Consumer Justice Administration.
