 Sikkim Government College, Tadong was established in September 1977 by an Act of State Legislature. The campus is spread over 22 acres in Tadong, 5 km from Gangtok, the Capital of Sikkim. The College is affiliated to Sikkim University and is governed by Directorate of Higher Education, Human Resource Development Department, Government of Sikkim. The College strived to cater to the growing need of quality education in Sikkim. The College follows intensive semester system and Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) having an up-to-date, inter-disciplinary and interactive course structure.

Sikkim Government College upholds its mission of emancipating our youth through value-based holistic higher education. The College offers 19 UG courses and 5 PG courses and is affiliated to Sikkim University. The curriculum is regularly updated by the University with the participation of faculty members of each department of the College.

Our constant endeavour is to promote student centric activities. The teachers take part in seminars, workshops and other faculty oriented programmes to update themselves in recent developments in research which benefits the students as well as themselves. The college provides internal conducive academic environment in the form of well organized classrooms, LCD projectors, computers, maps and charts, equipments and other instruments. The teaching equipments have been procured by the college with funds from UGC, DST, DONER and DBT.

Admission to the UG and PG programmes is by a transparent and well administered process complying with the norms of State and Central Government. The admission is notified in the newspapers and in the local news channels. The eligibility criterion is published in the prospectus and admission is based on merit in the marks obtained by the applicant in class XII for Under Graduate courses. For Post Graduation courses, admission is based on the marks obtained in the Under Graduation and Entrance Test conducted by the College.

The College has semester system with innovative methods of teaching, learning such as Term paper presentations/ Project works/ Field works and Guest lectures. The slow learners are provided with remedial classes. The Central Library is provided easy access to UGC- INFLIBNET for both students and faculty members. Each department has a departmental library which facilitates easy learning to the students.

The College provides administrative and academic resources to the faculty members to submit project proposals and approach funding agencies for procuring resources for research. The College encourages research on topics/ issues of contemporary relevance and global significance. This has resulted in 8 UGC funded Minor Research projects, 1 project funded by ICSSR, 1 Major project funded by UGC, 1 Major project from DBT and 2 Major project from DST availed by the faculty members. 113 research papers have been published by the teachers in National and International Journals and 44 faculty members have published chapters in books. The Teachers have also guided scholars for Ph.D and M.Phil.

The College has established an Institutional level Bio tech Hub funded by Department of Bio Technology, Government of India in the year 2013 and this hub conducts workshops and training in Molecular Biology for students of the College and teachers. Students form Sikkim University have also participated in these programmes.

The faculty members of the College have won many awards in fields of Literature and research. University of North Bengal had recognized the Department of Botany till 2011 and Department of Chemistry till date, as Research centre in the College. Some of the faculty members are approved research guides in the College and a few are also working in collaboration with Universities abroad and with Institutes of national importance.

The College also organizes value education talks, awareness campaigns on health and other social issues, campus cleaning drives under the tutelage of NCC, NSS, Nature Club and Students’ club “Stars of Hope”. Spiritual leaders, Doctors, Police Personnel, Advocates have delivered special talks on issues pertinent to the youth. These campaigns have made the students aware of health and hygiene, selfless services and imbibed in them sensitivity towards social and environmental issues. Yoga classes have been conducted in the College for the students and the people in the vicinity of the College.

Infrastructure facilities are crucial for effective conduct of academic programmes. The College is committed to effective and optimum use of its available infra structure and upgradation of its existing facilities. Government of Sikkim has been striving to improve the infrastructural facilities of the colleges to facilitate quality education. Free laptops have been provided to all the students of the College by the Government of Sikkim to aid in the learning process. The College has 31 classrooms, 15 laboratories. Computer/ Data centre, Smart classroom and Seminar room. Specialized labs like microbiology lab, research lab and Biotech labs are also used for effective learning and research. The College has a central Library with a seating capacity of 150 students.

The College encourages the teachers to avail of Minor/ Major research projects which help to improve infrastructure and augment learning quality. The College has a Department of Physical Education with spacious playground, volleyball court and badminton court. The Multi-purpose gymnasium will be completed very soon and handed over to the College.

The College has two hostels within its precincts and construction of two more hostels is underway. The Boys hostel with a capacity of 72 students and Girls hostel with a capacity of 54 students have been provided with arrangements to provide academically conducive, safe and secure environment with homely food and hot water facilities. Daily newspapers, Books and Television facilities are also provided to the students. Access to internet will be provided to them shortly from January 2016.

Maintenance and upkeep of the College infrastructure is ensured by Human Resource Development Department, Government of Sikkim. The College administers repairs and maintenance of Lab instruments/ equipments as and when needed.

The College updates the prospectus annually and also in the event of changes made by Sikkim University and Government of Sikkim. As visualized in the vision and Mission of the college and to supplement quality teaching the academic programmes, scientific activities, sports and cultural activities are organized in the College regularly to enlighten the students and to provide them to show case their academic creativity and sports talent. The students are members of the Discipline committee, Anti- Ragging committee, Nature club, Grievance Redressal cell, Women’s cell and Gender Sensitization unit. This enables them to develop leadership skills and personality development. Students Grievance Redressal cell effectively functions in the College. The cell analyses the grievances of the students at the end of every semester and addresses them accordingly.

The Government of Sikkim has provided freeship to all the students from the state of Sikkim. Scholarships are provided to the Below Poverty Line (BPL) students and ST/SC/ OBC students by the department of Social Welfare Government of Sikkim. Ishan Uday scholarship, a flagship programme of UGC for the North Eastern State have been availed by the students of the College.

Career Counseling Cell has also strengthened the support services to students by regularly counseling the students. Defense and eminent personalities have delivered talks based on career counseling and motivation to the students.

The College students have also actively participated in various sports activities, National and International level and won accolades for the College. The College has a registered Alumni Association whose contribution has been very positive and constructive towards the development of the Institution.

The College also conducts remedial classes for week students and as a part of Health care facilities First- Aid Box are available in the College and the Hostels. Free treatment is provided to the students by Sir Thutob Namgyal Memorial (STNM) hospital.

The College has always provided wholesome development to students and given effective support to the exit level.

Holistic development of students for which a number of Healthy practices are followed.

    The College has adopted various measures to maintain a clean and pollution free environment in collaboration with the Department of Forest Environment and Wild life management, Government of Sikkim.
    The NSS and Nature club maintain the greenery and cleanliness of the campus. Energy conservation, plantation, use of Solar energy and E waste management, restricting use of plastics are some of the initiatives that motivate the students to protect the environment.
    Internal assessment of the students for 50% marks, continuous evaluation, semester wise teaching, Term paper presentations help in a more effective and unconventional method of judging the students.
    WIFI campus, Internet access, Xerox facility for students, smart classroom, use of LCD projectors for Term paper presentation has made learning more effective.
    The faculty members have Minor/ Major research projects funded by UGC, DST, DBT, ICSSR and other Government funding agencies. Paper presentations have been done at National level and abroad. Post Doctoral researches have been carried on by the faculties. Research guidance for PhD scholars is also undertaken.
    Purified drinking water has been made available inside the campus.
    OPAC enabled library, CCTV, installation of Computers in every department, Power generator, Data centre are some of the facilities available inside the campus.
    Grievance Boxes, Suggestion Box are provided for the convenience of the students.
