ABOUT LOYOLA
 

1.        GENERAL INFORMATION

Loyola College of Education is a Catholic, Private, Minority institution situated at Namchi, the South District of Sikkim in a sprawling and picturesque ten acres of land at the foothills of the Himalayas. It was started in response to the request of the Government of Sikkim and is named after St Ignatius of Loyola, the Founder of the Society of Jesus.
The Society of Jesus was founded in 1540 by St Ignatius of Loyola and its members are popularly known as the Jesuits. It is an International Catholic Religious Order with its members engaged in activities such as Education, Social Action, Legal Aid, Communication, Pastoral Works, Adult and Rural Literacy Programmes, Environmental studies etc.
 

2.         THE BEGINNING

The concept of an educational institution like Loyola College of Education in Sikkim was originally conceived by Fr Cherian Padiyara, S.J., the then Regional Superior of the Darjeeling Jesuits. This vision was subsequently concretized and professionally & aesthetically designed by Mr Kiran Rasaily. Its foundation stone was blessed by Fr Peter Hans Kolevanbach, S.J., the then Superior General of the Society of Jesus on March 03, 1993. The construction of the College building was supervised & got ready for use by June 1994 by Fr Giles Goluckmu, S.J., and the first batch of trainees was admitted in July,1994.

3.         VISION, MISSION AND OBJECTIVES

Vision

Preparing men and women for others who are intellectually alert, religiously mutually accepting and respecting, socially adjusted, physically healthy, psychologically balanced, and politically conscious of their rights and duties.

Mission

We, the Darjeeling Jesuits and our Partners, inspired by the Person and Teachings of Jesus Christ, aim in our Educational Ministry a radical change of heart in our students, staff, parents and the community, so that they are persons of competence, conscience and compassion doing committed service to all to bring about a visibly just society.

Objectives

1.      To prepare conscientious, committed, competent, and compassionate citizens of the country.

2.      To impart quality education in the field of Secondary Teacher’s training.

3.      To develop critical and creative thinking in the minds of her students.

4.      To educate together with their minds the hearts of her students.

5.      To impart value based training to her students.

 

4.         MANAGEMENT

Loyola College of Education, Namchi is a Minority Institution managed by the Darjeeling Jesuits of North Bengal. It has a Governing Body with the Provincial of Darjeeling Jesuit Province as its President. To support it in the day-to-day running of the Institution there is a Managing Committee of the College with representatives of the Government of Sikkim, the Sikkim University, the Teaching Staff of the College and that of the well known educationists of South Sikkim.

5.         FINANCE & FEES

Loyola College of Education, Namchi is an Un-Aided Institution. Hence, all its financial needs are met entirely by the fees collected from the students, which is revised periodically according to the needs of the institution. Fees are charged as per the Fee Structure approved by the Managing Committee of the college. A copy of the same shall be sent to each of the selected candidates. Both, the Academic and the Hostel Fees are to be paid in FOUR installments. The first Installment is collected at the time of admission while the remaining three shall be collected on the first three working days of the remaining three Semesters.

6.         AFFILIATION

Loyola College of Education, Namchi, is affiliated to the Sikkim University ( A Central University established by an Act of Parliament of India, 2007). It enjoys permanent recognition by the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE), the statutory body for training teachers for Secondary Education and has been NAAC accredited with a [B] Grade.

7.         ADMISSION

The admission to Loyola College of Education, Namchi, is open to all irrespective of their caste, creed or class, sex and place of birth. However, everything being equal, a preferential option is given to the candidates form Sikkim and also those from the under-privileged group whom Christ loved and served most.

8.         ELIGIBILITY

Only those candidates would be eligible for admission who have secured a minimum of 50% in the aggregate in their Graduation/Post Graduation examinations form any recognized university. (Relaxation would be granted to SC/ST candidates who produce the relevant certificates). Working knowledge of English is essential. Applicants coming from Universities other than Sikkim University need to submit their Migration Certificates preferably at the time of their admissions or latest by the end of July. Since the Affiliating University, i.e. Sikkim University does not specify any age limit for admission to B.Ed. course, there is no Age –Limit for admission.

9.        MEDIUM OF INSTRUCTION

The medium of instruction in the college is English. All curriculum transactions, such as Micro Teaching, Simulated Teaching, Internship Teaching, Term Papers, and Mid Semester as well as the Final Semester Examinations will be in English.

10.       CHOICE OF METHOD PAPER

The College offers the following school subjects as the method papers:

Group I. English, History, Geography, & Economics;
Group II. Mathematics, Biological Sciences, Physics and Chemistry.

As per the present syllabus, a teacher trainee will have to choose TWO subjects from the above, taking ANY TWO from either Group. However, if the number of students choosing a particular subject is less than five, then that particular Method Paper may not be offered by the college; students will have to opt for some other subject.
 

11.       ACADEMIC PERIOD

From the academic session 2015 – 2016, B.Ed. course is of two years duration divided into four semesters. The semesters are named as Spring (Vasanta) and Monsoon (Varsha) which are the two very crucial seasons for the sustenance of the entire hill and mountain regions. Table 1 highlights the academic period of the College.
