    B.A

  • Social Sciences and Humanities is one of the oldest disciplines in the college. It was popular right from its inception, attracting students of high calibre. Over the years, it has gained an impressive reputation, as most of its alumnae have progressed to various institutions in India as well as abroad, to pursue their higher education. Many of its alumnae also occupy respectable positions in the government sector and the private sector. Some of them are officers in the IAS, the IPS and IRS, while some others have risen to senior positions in various multinationals. The faculty that handles BA comprises eight departments at present - History, Economics, Political Science, Public Administration, Literature (English), Psychology, Mass Communication & Journalism and Social Management.
    History
    The Department of History has restructured the syllabus of History to lay focus on the economy & society that evolved in India over a period of time, rather than deal merely with Political History. The syllabus is no longer centred around the conventional method of dates and names, but has been framed to give students a panoramic view of the development of Indian culture and civilization through the ages, and also a glimpse of parallely occurring developments in the world. It has been designed to prepare students for competitive exams as well. The Department also offers a paper on Tourism, in the final semester, which is a popular course that is also job-oriented. Besides classroom teaching, the curriculum involves field trips to monuments (both local and national), heritage walks and screenings of historical films.
    Economics
    The Department of Economics has introduced innovative inclusions in quantitative techniques. Environment Economics enables students to apply for their master`s in Economics. The Department`s new club, FIRE, helps students work with the subject better.
    Political Science
    The Department of Political Science has periodically restructured its syllabi, keeping with the changing global political environment and trends in the subject taught across colleges and universities. Apart from new concepts and theories, students are exposed to the nature of governance in China, Australia, Japan and Russia. They are familiarized with the functioning of the British Parliament and the US Presidency. Students are encouraged to debate and discuss the changing trends and dynamics of the Indian political system. Contemporary political thought in Europe and America are also taught, besides early Indian and Western political thought. Students exposed to global issues and conditions by a course study in International Relations. India`s position vis-a vis the world forms an important segment of this course.
    Public Administration
    The Department of Public Administration teaches students about the political, social, economic and cultural issues of the times. As a discipline, Public Administration endeavors in understanding the "public" in a globalised world. The emphasis of its subjects is on the concepts and administrative theory, with focus on an in-depth analysis of financial and personnel administration. Students also get to explore the new and emerging issues of governance and administration.
    English
    The Department of English deals with English language teaching and English literature. The revised syllabus of communication skills is spread over 2 years (4 semesters), and aims at training students to be more competent with their language skills - both oral and written - thereby making them confident enough to face the world outside. This effort has been made effective with the help of the Language Lab, which was started in June 2011. The 3-year syllabus for Literature entails a detailed study of the history of literature spread across periods and culture. The syllabi of this Department give students an insight into contemporary women`s writing as well. The final semester focuses on the critical appreciation of American Literature.
    Psychology
    The Department of Psychology strives, at every level, to update the course according to the latest trends and developments in the field of psychology, with a blend of theory and practicals. The theory papers are structured in a way that the students can apply the learning in their day-to-day lives. Students are trained to enhance their academic skills through regular reading, coupled with report writing, paper reviews and book reviews, movie reviews, role-plays and group presentations. The Department focuses on research & development in the field of psychology, and encourages students to take up an experiential study in the 5th and 6th semesters.
    Mass Communication & Journalism
    The Department of Mass Communication and Journalism enables students to gain an awareness of the personal qualities and professional skills needed to work successfully in the print media and the broadcast industry. Students are exposed to both classroom teaching and studio-based learning during the three-year program.
    Social Management
    The Department of Social Management offers a Social Management programme, which gives an understanding of social responsibilities and issues and their management. It encourages hands-on innovations, and provides students an opportunity to develop leadership qualities. The course prepares students to pursue careers that require powerful analytical, managerial and communication skills, along with a sound understanding of human behavior in social settings.

    Teaching Methodology
    Classroom lessons are supplemented with interactive sessions. "Extension lectures" by eminent practitioners are organized throughout the year, by all departments. Modern teaching tools, including OHPs and LCD screens, are used to aid the staff in presenting topics. Various assignments and projects are given to students to enrich the learning experience. Along with regular tests and the Internal Assessment, students are tested for their practical and creative skills. Students are assessed based on their participation in role-play sessions, field trips, exhibitions, individual and group presentations, case studies, book reviews and mini projects.
    Bridge Courses
    Bridge courses are conducted for helping slow learners and first-generation learners.
    General Proficiency Prizes
    Every year, students who stand first and second in every class are given General Proficiency Prizes on College Day.
