Courses Offered
- All the undergraduate degree courses shall be taught in semester mode in the academic session 2012-13.
1. B.Sc. Physical Sciences (Electronics) and (Chemistry)
The subjects to be studied are Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Mathematics, Environmental Science, Computational Skills and English for B.Sc Physical Science (Chemistry) students.
B.Sc Physical Science (Electronics) students will study Physics, Electronics, Biology, Mathematics, Environmental Science, Computational Skills and English.
Admissions will be based on merit to be determined from marks in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics.
2. B.Sc. (Hons.):
(i) Chemistry
B.Sc. (Hons.) Chemistry is an integrated course. Admissions are based on merit to be determined from marks in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics.
(ii) Physics
B.Sc. (Hons.) Physics is an integrated course. Admissions are based on merit to be determined from marks in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics.
(iii) Mathematics
Mathematics is the main subject to be studied along with three courses from disciplines other than Mathematics. Admissions are based on merit to be determined by marks in English + Mathematics + Two subjects from the academic stream as mentioned in the University bulletin with a minimum of 90% of marks in Mathematics in class XII.
Along with Mathematics papers, a student will have to opt for 4 credit courses from disciplines other than mathematics and a qualifying paper. A student will, have to choose one course each from credit-I in Semester I, Credit course-II in Semester-II and qualifying course in Semester-III. A student will have to opt for 2 courses from credit-III as credit-III .1 and credit course-III.2 in VI and IV Semesters, respectively. In those subjects where more than one course is offered the student will opt for one of the courses. But if a student opts for physics –II, he/she may opt for physics (lab). The marks of the credit course-I, II, III.1 and III .2 shall count in the final result of the student.

Every student must opt for at least one language. It can either be a credit course or a qualifying course. If they are opting for a language in both the credit as well as the qualifying course then these cannot be the same languages.
A student offering Chemistry / Physics-I as credit course-I will not be allowed to offer the same as Credit course II
A student offering Chemistry / Physics-I as credit course-I can opt for Chemistry (Lab) / Physics (Lab) as credit courseII but they cannot opt for these courses as qualifying courses.
A student will be allowed to take Chemistry (Lab) / Physics (Lab) as qualifying course if they have opted for Chemistry / Physics-I, respectively as credit course.
(iv) Statistics
B.Sc. (Hons.) Statistics is an integrated course. Admissions are based on merit determined on the basis of the marks in the best four subjects according to the following criteria
Category A: (Mathematics + English + two best subjects) from Science stream (Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Computer Science, Biotechnology and Economics).
Category B: (Mathematics + English + two best subjects) /Commerce streams (Economics, Business studies, Accountancy and Commerce)
Category C: (Mathematics + one language + two elective / Academic subjects.
(v) Botany
Botany is the main subject, with Chemistry, Maths, Computational skills and English as the other subjects.
Admissions are based on merit to be determined from marks in Biology / Biotechnology, Physics, and Chemistry.
(vi) Zoology
Zoology is the main subject, with Chemistry, Maths, Computational skills and English as the other subjects.
Admissions are based on merit to be determined from marks in Biology / Biotechnology, Physics, and Chemistry.
3. B.Com. (Hons.)
The candidate must have studied and secured a minimum of 60% marks in English and Mathematics for all the categories, to become eligible for admission to this course.
Note:
(a) The college has facility for instruction only in English. Certain level of proficiency is therefore, needed in the language.
(b) Study of Maths is fundamental to the understanding of various papers of the honors course.
The cut-off percentage will be expressed as X% and above in all the lists thereby keeping open the previous lists also.

Regarding the optional papers, Commerce Department of Hindu College will have the discretion to decide about the same.
The students will be divided into three categories below:
Category A: For students who have studied the following subjects:
English-Core, Functional, Elective
Maths- Mathematics, Advanced maths, Business maths (as allowed by the University).
Commerce / Businesses Studies
Accountancy
Economics
The best four will be determined on the basis of English and any three of the remaining subjects (2, 3, 4, 5) listed above subject to the same percentage in Accountancy as the main cut-off percentage.
Category B: For students who have studied the following subjects:
English
Maths
Physics
Chemistry
Biology
The best four will be determined on the basis of English and any three of the remaining subjects (2, 3, 4, 5) listed above. A differential of 2.5% will be observed vis-a-vis category A.
Category C: For students who have studied English and Mathematics with three academic subjects, the best four will be determined on the basis of any one language (MIL), and any three of the remaining academic subjects excluding:
Physical Education
Music
Dance
Home Science
Engineering Drawing
Fine arts
Agriculture
A differential of 3% will be observed vis-a-vis category A.
4. B.A. (Hons.) Humanities and Social Sciences
Students offering B.A. (Hons.) courses will study their main subject along with concurrent courses. These Concurrent / Discipline Centered courses have four components:
Language Credit Course: The College offers English, Hindi and Sanskrit.
Qualifying Course: The College offers English, Hindi, Sanskrit and Philosophy.
The Interdisciplinary Courses:
Philosophy Department: Ethics in the Public Domain
History Department: Environmental Issues in India
(c) Political Science Department: Reading Gandhi
English Department: The Individual and Society
OR
Hindi Department: Hindi Language, Literature, and Culture
Sociology Department: Gender and Society
Mathematics Department: Mathematical Awareness
Sanskrit Department: Nationalism and Indian literature
Note : Individual Departments are responsible for administering the course. Teachers from other Departments can contribute to the teaching of the course, if needed.
(iv) Discipline-Centered Courses in the following Departments:
Hindi (e) Political Science
English (f) History
Sanskrit (g) Sociology
Philosophy (h) Mathematics
Note : The actual courses to be taught shall be decided by the respective Departments.
In the first year, a student shall offer (i), (ii) and (iii).
In the second year, a student shall offer two Discipline Centered courses.
The marks of the qualifying subjects shall not be counted in the final result.
English
The main subject in English is Literature and the following Concurrent Courses are available:
Admission to the B.A. (Hons.) English course will be done through a Combined Aptitude Test for English (CATE), to be held under the aegis of the Department of English, University of Delhi. The test will evaluate candidates’ aptitude for the course.
The test will be held on 5th June, 2011.
The criteria for appearing in the test will be:
(i) A minimum of 60% marks in English (Functional, Core, Elective, etc) in the school-leaving (Class XII) examination, AND
(ii) A minimum of 60% aggregate in the best 4 subjects (including English).
The CATE score will be calculated on a 30:70 ratio of the class XII aggregate marks: CATE marks.
SC/ST/PH/Foreign students will be admitted as per the rules of the University. Relaxation for Armed Forces personnel will be as per University rules. Such students will have to appear for the CATE. OBC students will be given up to a maximum relaxation of 10 on their CATE cut-off score, as determined by the 29 respective colleges, at the time of admission only.
Colleges will admit students from the CATE score list on the basis of cut-offs fixed by them respectively. There will be no centralised allocation of candidates to the different colleges by the University.

Economics
Economics is the main subject to be studied along with the concurrent courses.
Admission Criteria
Admission to the B.A. (Hons) course in Economics will be based on merit determined according to the averages percentage secured in the Class XII Examination in a combination of four subjects, with the subject combination defined by any of the following three categories:
Category A: One MIL, Mathematics/Business Mathematics, and any two Commerce subjects
Category B: One MIL, Mathematics/Business Mathematics, and any two Science subjects (1% lower than category A)
Category C: One MIL, Mathematics/Business Mathematics, and any two Humanities subjects (2% lower than Category A)
Category D: One MIL, Mathematics/Business Mathematics, and any two elective subjects (1% higher than Category A)

The cut-off for respective categories will be intimated at the time of admission according to University calendar.
The cut-off for OBC categories will be lower than the General category cut-off for categories A, B, C and D and the difference will be intimated at the time of admission according to the University calendar.
All four subjects shall be given equal weightage in determining a candidate’s average percentage.
A candidate must have secured at least 60% marks in English in the Class XII Examination to be eligible for admission.
The one Language that shall be considered would ordinarily be English or Hindi (Official Indian Languages of different states other than Hindi may be considered in cases where the candidate has studied the language in Class X and Class XII).
The specific subjects that a candidate can consider as Commerce, Science and Humanities in categories A, B and C respectively, and as any two elective subjects in category D will be determined as per University guidelines at the time of admission.
(iii) History
History is the main subject to be studied along with the concurrent courses. Admissions shall be done strictly on merit under the following categories:
Category A: One Language + History and Two Other Social Sciences Subjects.
Category B: One Languages and Three Social Sciences Subjects.
Category C: One Language and Three Science / Commerce Stream Subjects.
Category D: One Language and any Three academic Subjects.
Note: Over many years the Department has noted that candidates with social science subjects do not acquire as many marks as the candidates with Science/Commerce streams. Therefore due weightage is given to the candidates, with social science subjects rather than to the Science/Commerce subjects. The difference of percentage between category A&B will be of two percent i.e. Category B will be kept higher by 2% than Category A. Category C will be higher by 6% than Category A while the last Category D would be higher by 8% than Category A. This is same as the last year i.e. 2011-2012.
(iv) Philosophy
Philosophy is the main subject to be studied along with the concurrent courses. Admissions to B. A. Honours in Philosophy will be done on the basis of merit as per the Categories drawn up by the Department of Philosophy. The College has facility for instruction only in English. Hence, proficiency in written and spoken English is required.
Category A: One Language + Three Humanities/Social Science Subjects; Hindi Core, English Core, English Elective, and Other Languages. Academic Subjects: English Elective, Philosophy, Mathematics, Economics, Political Science, History, Geography, Fine Arts, Sociology, Psychology.
Category B: One Language + Three Science/Commerce Stream Subjects. Academic Subjects: Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Mathematics, Biotechnology, Psychology, Computer Science, Informatics Practices, Economics, Business Studies and Accountancy.
Category C: One Language + any Three Subjects from the academic stream.
Category A would be the privileged Category as students with Humanities/Social Science background fair well in Philosophy. There would be a difference of 3% between Category A and Category B, white Category C students would be required to have 5% higher marks than Category A Students.
The Department of Philosophy offers the following Concurrent Courses for the following year 2012-13.
Ethics in the Public Domain (Concurrent Language Qualifying Course for Semester-I students)
Ethics in the Public Domain (Concurrent Interdisciplinary course for semester –III Students)
Formal Logic (Concurrent Discipline centered course for Semester –IV students) N.B.: Due to the large number of students opting for this course, it is taught to three batches of students simultaneously.
(v) Political Science
Political Science is the main subject to be studied along with the concurrent courses.
Category A: One language + Political Science + any other two social science subjects.
Category B: One language + any three social science subjects.
Category C: One language + any three subjects from science/commerce streams.
Category D: One language + any other combination of three academic subjects (The list of academic subjects is as per the Information bulletin of the University of Delhi)
(vi) Hindi
Hindi is the main subject to be studied along with the concurrent courses. All candidates who have passed their Class XII examinations with Hindi as one of the subject shall be eligible for admission to B.A. (Hons.) Hindi based on merit in the categories given below:
Category A: For Art Stream: Hindi + any three Social Science Subjects
Category B: For Science / Commerce Stream: 5% higher than Category A.
(vii) Sanskrit
Sanskrit is the main subject to be studied along with the Concurrent Courses. Selection for admission to B.A. (Hons.) Sanskrit will be made from among those students who have studied Sanskrit up to Class X and XII.
(viii) Sociology
Sociology is the main subject to be studied along with the Concurrent Courses. The College has facility for instruction only in English. Proficiency in spoken and written English is a must. Admission shall be done strictly on went under the following categories:
Category A: One language + Sociology + any Two elective subjects (3% less than category B)
Category B: One language + any Three elective subjects (3% more than Category-A)
The Department of Sociology offers the following Concurrent Courses for the following year 2012-13.
Gender and Society (Semester-III students)
Sociology of Contemporary India (Semester IV Students)
(ix) Music
The candidates desirous of seeking admission to B.A. (H) Music need to contact the Faculty of Music / Fine Arts University of Delhi, for relevant details. The College merely enrolls the candidates for the said course only after the registration of eligible candidates is done by the Faculty.
5. B.A. (Programme)
Admission to this course will be on the basis of both merit and sports/extra-curricular activities. Admission shall be done under the following categories
Category A: One language + three social science subjects. (4% less than category B.)
Category B: One language + any three academic subjects. (4% more than category A) The structure of B.A. Programme is as follows :
First year: Two Language courses.
The College offers English, Hindi (or Philosophy in case of those who have not studied Hindi at Class X or Class XII level) and Sanskrit.
Two Discipline Courses from (i) Economics (ii) History (iii) Political Science (iv) Sanskrit (v) Philosophy (vi) Elective English (This is applicable for both Semester 1 and Semester 2)
Second year: One Language
One Foundation Course
Two Discipline Courses (Continuing from First Year)
The College has decided to offer two Foundation Courses out of which the students have to select any one.
They are:
(a) Human Rights, Gender and Environment
(b) Language, Literature and Culture (both in Hindi and English Medium).
Third year: One Language
Two Discipline Courses (Continuing from First and Second Years)
One Application Course from:
(a) Disaster Management
(b) Computer Applications
(c) Creative Writing
Note: The College reserves the right to change the subject combinations if necessary.
6. M.A., M.Sc., M.Com.
The College enrolls students for the following Post-Graduate Courses:
English, Hindi, Economics, Sanskrit, Political Science, Philosophy, History, Statistics, Commerce, Operational Research and Mathematics.
The number of seats for the Post-Graduate Courses in Physics, Chemistry, Botany and Zoology are fixed by the University of Delhi. Admission in all courses is made in order of merit as per lists brought out by the University.
REMEDIAL TEACHING
The College has been organising Remedial Coaching classes for the SC/ST students for all the Under-Graduate Courses from the beginning of each academic session. Any student can get herself/himself enrolled for these classes with the respective department. These classes are held in the afternoon for the students of the categories mentioned in order to remove their specific problems.
CANCELLATION OF ADMISSION AND REFUND OF FEES
A student who wishes to get his/her admission cancelled must apply in prescribed form to the Principal with his/her application countersigned by his/her guardian/parent. Refund of fee will be made as per University of Delhi rules. In case a student drops out without such a formal withdrawal, his/her security deposit refund will be made in accordance with the University of Delhi rules.
