IT Muzaffarpur is the only institute in Bihar to have the leather technology programme. The very idea was conceived by Dr. A. R. Swaminathan, the then managing director, Bihar State Leather Industries Developement Corporation and was finally given shape in 1986. This department gives an opportunity to the engineering students to persue a career in one of the rapidly developing industries of today.

This is one of the top recognised institutes in India providing excellence in this branch. Various other leather institutions are in contact with the department for latest knowledge sharing in this field.The four academic years course has been devised so wisely and discriptively that the student is introduced to his branch and the study material right from the 1st academic year. After introduction into detail procelling of skins divided into three categories with a well equipped TANNERY WORKSHOP. This workshop practice is preceeded with ANALYTICAL CHEMISTRY LAB to study in detail the various chemicals.
This includes a detailed study of computational technology and electronics to be at par with the digital world. The study of ENGINEERING ECONOMICS AND MANAGEMENT succeeds in third academic with the study of vrious finishing techniques and physical testing. For this purpose, the PHYSICAL TESTING AND QUALITY CONTROL LAB is well equipped with various strength testing and other machines to give a practical knowledge of the demerits in the leather processed and their causes.
The COMPUTER ADDED DESIGN of leather products and FASHION STYLING enables one to get and design the various UPPERS and even inhances his creativituy (TANNERY WORKAPRACTICE 2) leather process tech. and leather product tech. are the ones which polish the students knowledge in the final academic year with practicals of manufacture of various FOOTWARE AND MATERIAL TESTING.- Tannery Workshop
