- The department of Agricultural Biotechnology at Assam
Agricultural University is one of the leading Biotechnology teaching
and research facility in India. The Department of Biotechnology, Govt of India sponsored a separate Post-Graduate teaching programme under the department of Plant Breeding and Genetics in 1988, which later on became a full-fledged department in 1996.
The department offers both Masters and PhD degree programmes in Agricultural Biotechnology, but most importantly conducts cutting edge research in the field of Gene Technology, Microbial Biotechnology, Crop Genomics, Molecular Breeding, Medicinal and Aromatic Plants and Bioinformatics. The department also has a major outreach programme under which it runs a commercial tissue culture laboratory to produce large number of planting material of banana for the use of the farmers of the region.
