    agriculture engineering

  • Background

Department of Agricultural Engineering is a constituent department under the Faculty of Agriculture, Assam Agricultural University, Jorhat.

It caters to teaching undergraduate courses of Agriculture and Research mostly on network mode. Moreover, besides reasonable extension activities, the Department also involves itself with minor repair and maintenance activities of various departments, laboratories, farms, hostels etc. under both the Faculties of Agriculture and Home Science.

Agricultural engineering is the engineering discipline that applies engineering science and technology to to production, processing, preservation and handling of food, feed and fiber. Agricultural engineering combines the disciplines of animal biology, plant biology, and mechanical, civil, electrical and chemical engineering principles in:

·Design of agricultural machinery, equipment, and agricultural structures

·Internal combustion engines as applied to agricultural machinery

·Agricultural/natural resource management (including land use and water use)

·Water management, conservation, and storage for crop irrigation  and  livestock production

·Soil management and conservation, including erosion and erosion control

·Seeding, tillage, harvesting, and processing of crops

·Waste management, including animal waste, agricultural residues, and fertilizer runoff

·Food engineering and the processing of agricultural products

·Bio resource engineering and rural energy

    Vision
To make agriculture sustainable, profitable and competitive enterprise through engineering interventions of farm mechanization, value addition and energy management in production and post harvest operations in the state of Assam.

    Mission

To develop and introduce need-based and region-specific engineering technologies to achieve sustainable enhanced productivity and profitability of different stake holders.

    Mandate

To plan, coordinate, monitor Teaching, Extension and R&D programmes and serve as an information repository in Agricultural Engineering
