INTRODUCTION
The Present Department of Biochemistry and Agricultural Chemistry was developed from the Chemistry and Biochemistry Section, which was bifurcated in 1982-83 from the Department of Agricultural Chemistry and Soil Science under the Faculty of Agriculture. The present department came into existence in 1986 and Late Dr. L. Dutta was the Founder Head of the Department.
The discipline of Biochemistry today occupies a pivotal position in Teaching and Research of all Biological and Agricultural Sciences. Since its inception, the Department has produced a number of bright scientists, now pursuing their careers in India and abroad. A group of scientists and trainees are dedicated to the expansion and transmission of knowledge about the biological world. The main focus is the characterization of macromolecules and biological processes at the molecular level. The research trainees receive a solid grounding in the fundamentals of biology and biochemistry and experience with contemporary approaches to problems of significant current interest. Graduates and Post Graduates of our program have had good success in finding outstanding opportunities for additional training and/or professional development in the national and international level. The diversity of our quest and approaches together in collaboration with other departments fosters a dynamic intellectual environment within the Department to carry out significant original research that reveals the molecular mechanisms underlying life of all varieties and that provides excellent training for undergraduate students, graduate students, post Graduate students and Ph. D. students
In addition to various extramural research grants, the department, is supported by some core grants sanctioned by DST, New Delhi, DBT, New Delhi, ICAR, New Delhi that helped to maintain numerous research facilities such as high speed and ultra centrifuges, spectrophotometers, deep freezers, orbital shakers, PCR machines, GC-MS, Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer, Microwave Digestion System, Nitrogen Analyser, Electrophoresis system, Lyophilizer, FTIR, Gel Documentation system, , Analytical and preparative HPLC, fluorescence microscopes, Real Time PCR etc. in the Department and in the Central Instrumentation Facility of the University under this Department
The Department has a vision to perform scientific research at the highest international levels, integrating cutting-edge multidisciplinary approaches in solving significant problems in biology and agricultural sciences; and to develop internationally competitive professionals with excellent leadership, communication and teamwork skills who can contribute to an exceptional talent pool in India and at international level.
