- The department started functioning as the Department of Animal Husbandry , since the inception of the College of Agriculture in 1948, then known as Assam Agriculture College, under the headship of Late Dr. K.C. Mahanta, a renowned scientist and academician . When the Assam Agricultural University came into existence in 1969, the department was renamed as Department of Animal Production and Management. During the late eighties, a further change in the name was made which continues till date as the Department of Animal Husbandry & Dairying . At present ,the department is functioning under the able headship of Dr. T.C.Brahma.
The department has two functional farms:-The Instructional Livestock farm and the instructional Poultry farm. The farms provide quality produce at cheap rates and also entertain farmers for first hand knowledge of farming systems.
The mandate of the department is to develop quality human resource in different Animal Husbandry practices ,through formal education at undergraduate level and to transfer developed technologies to the farmers’ field through various extension activities.
